China launches mission for first spacewalk

advertisement

China successfully launched a three-man crew into space Thursday to carry out the country's first spacewalk, beginning the nation's most challenging space mission since it first sent a person into space in 2003.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

It's too bad the Chinese astronauts will get sick drinking tainted space milk and probably have the space runs. Bet that spacecraft will smell really good after a few days.

They are able to do this on our money that we send over there with everything that we buy. If they have the money for this and the olympics why can't they do something about the regulations on food and products?

yeah, good remark, if Chinese government has the drive to put up an extravaganza show for the Olympic and the extremely complicated technology to send people into space and a satellite to the moon, why don't they fix the relatively simple food contamination issues one after another?

Unless I am wrong, I don't think the food problems are more complicated, probably only need an independent government agency like the FDA to make legislations and give thorough inspections for all food, drug and medical device items. If they can not possibly inspect everything, they still should not waive the inspections as the Sanlu fiasco, they should still give everyone the impression and the fear factor that the inspectors may show up on your door at any time like our FDA. I am very surprised that they can send people into space and yet lack this simple wisdom. How naive they think that they can rely on people's voluntary honesty to make good products?

Let me first clarify that I am a US citizen and I am not defending China in any shape or form. I merely want to discuss engineering aspect of space flight because I hold advanced degree in engineering.

China has a lot of qualified engineers. There is no need for them to "steal" from us. Therefore people say "steal" have no clue what they are talking about. Space launching requires "system engineering". Even if China "steals" part of our space technology, there is no way they can put them together with their system. It is like that if you put a Ford part on Chevy, the car probably will not run, unless Ford and Chevy had previously agreed to design that part using the same specifications. I don't think we shared anything at all with them. On the contrary, we have been boycotting them on the so-called high technology items for over 40 years and the boycott is still continuing. Unfortunately this boycotting only hurt our technology growth by sharing with each other.

Another fact is that Japan has a very precise engineering for their rockets and each individual part is at least the same or even better than China's, yet they have launch failures one after another. The reason is because Japan's space system engineering is not as strong as China's.

Actually I have a strong suspicion that USA is lagging behind at this moment. Even NASA chief admitted that Chinese probably will beat us on the next moon landing.

Unless your goal is a racially motivated bashing, people made such remarks inadvertently reveals his/her ignorance!

I must admit that there are lot of smart Chinese engineers out there. Does anyone recall an article about the Chinese engineers disclosed the classified materials to the Chinese government? I have a bad memory but remember a line in there about engineers were saying 'a paid back to the motherland... something like that. Read this: http:// www. nysun. com/national/prosecution-spy-case-shows-chinas-effort-to-steal/51450/ (remove spaces)

I think there are millions of Mr. Mak out there. So I believe rorer714 is 99.9% right.

dogeatdog. you miss my point, the space technology requires system engineering, even a bunch of antiquated equipment can be put in a smart way to achieve a superior work. Apparently that is what Chinese are doing. They don't need to steal from the US to go to the moon, actually even with their current equipment, they are apparently winning the race. Some of these alleged Mr. mak and Mr. Win Ho Lee are turned out to be false accusations. US government had apologized to Mr. Lee, but the damage to his reputation hs already been done.

It is natural for China and Russia to cooperate on this venture. Hopefully one day, without our changing our political philosophy and economic system, we can engage with China in programs that benefit both our countries.
I hope the results of this space mission approximate the expenditures, and that somehow the powers engaged in space ventures get MORE than mere ego-building results. I've never been convinced that the serendipitous benefits of space programs have been worth the costs. They may have been, and if they have been, I hope China and the rest of the world will reap such rewards.
Congratulations to China on their accomplishment.

Since you like to talk about weird stuff. why not try this one:

I read something in the web that intrigued me. There was a Russian report published saying that the USA has landed in the moon in the 60's and found ancient civilizations with the size something like the bird nest and then concealed it. When the Korean heard this news, they immediately jumped on the bandwagon and declared that the writings on these bird nests are Korean language (OK guys, if you laugh your head off, I did not make this up, I copied from various sources and put them together).

This is amazing to me. However, the world needs to know that China is trying to show itself that it is significant to the world. That is why at the olympics the opening ceremony, unknown to most of the world, depicted Chinese conquest history -- not general Chinese history. The olympics was just another conquest. Space is just another conquest. And what I have found interesting lately is that Wall Street and the US economic system is also becoming another conquest. When Bush referred to overseas investment, where do you think most of it comes from -- Asia. Where is Asia are most of the financial assets -- China. China will attempt at some point to financially overtake the US. But the US government and our citizens are too busy to stop and see the actions that are building up to this. While they take over the economic base of the US, we are limited in the amount of investment that can be done in China by the Chinese government. After a company sets up in China within a short time period that company will find a clone of its operations down the road with the EXACT same product but with a Chinese name! But the company does not protest because the potential market in China outweighs the loss of this infringement. Listen to this last statement that I make very carefully; because it is a part of Chinese history. CHINA THINKS THEY DISCOVERED AMERICA IN 1421, AND CHINA HAS A CLAIM ON THAT LAND.

Dude, that's not a fresh one. Does it ring a bell abt 20 years ago? People said Japs will take over USA's econimic system and conquest the entire world. As a matter of fact, that's only the tricks made by the ones who took a flier in politics. So what happened with Japs econimics currently, especially after Plaza Accord in 1985? THAT'S JUST ANOTHER TRICK! We wanna defeat the Chinese for the world's NO.1, but we have to win in a smarter way.

Ignorance being the key word of everything I've read in all of these posts....

Congrats and good luck to the Chinese in their endeavour! Any venture into space will advance human knowledge of this quest. I am confident that, while the Chinese government in the '60s wasn't exactly 'jumping up and down' about our quest into space, their citizens were living vicariously through US. I think it is only fitting that we do the same now for them. I am vehemently against many of the things the Chinese (Gov't) stands for, but any space exploration must be good for all humanity.

Might I also suggest that future posters use the conveniently located 'Check Spelling'' button before posting (I did)? I realize that 'grammar checking' is a bit too much to ask.

Great job by the three Chinese astronauts to complete the space walk! It is an amazing achievement, a great leap forward for the Chinese space exploration program! Equally amazing is the fact that Chinese TV media are broadcast the whole event live, non-edit to the whole wide world. That shows that China is willing to and has been open herself up to the rest of world. As a developing country, it may not be perfect, yet, in my opinion, China had demonstrated a great deal of transparency and openness in its space program. This is a good thing for the world to coming together in cooperation, as one world, to peaceful use and exploration of the space, and the whole mankind can be benefit from that.

If they love China so much, why don't they go back there instead of getting American citizenship so they can run to America to educate their kids here.

Did your astronauts or whatever you called them scoop up the debris from the satellite you blew up last year? It may interfere with your future moon missions.

Their values need to be amended and there space program is nothing but a competition. They need to realise that the exploration of space should not be considered a competition against America and Europe but an aspect paramount to the survival of the human race. America... NATO in general should also realise this.

Who in the world is stupid or hopeful enough to say the Chinese are winning the race. The race to where? They probably have stolen most the technology but even if they didn't, it takes 45 year old technology to launch a manned space craft. USA and the Russians did it in the 60s. Note how the Chinese space suit looked nearly identical to the Russian one. We landed on the moon in 1969 - 39 years ago and someone is dumb enough to say they are winning the race??? Wishful thinking.

I wish the Chinese well. They need this. In the 60s, when we were walking on the moon, they were mass killing their own people especially anyone with an education. They were reading a little red book written by a despot who killed more of his own people than any foreign government ever did. They have come a long way and the world is better because of it.

The more successful they are the more likely their communist government will fall. Then the world will really be ahead. That is the race we should hope they win.

Valid points there, it took them long enough...

Their government makes my stomach queasy with unease; I wouldn't want to live there, that's for sure. They have however accomplished it, good for them but as you said they are not winning the space race.
